The ABS National, state and territory population release for December 2025, published on 18 June 2026, put Western Australia’s population at 3,076,500 people at 31 December 2025. The state added 65,500 people over the year, a growth rate of 2.2% compared with 1.5% nationally. Net overseas migration contributed 40,422 people, net interstate migration 10,419 and natural increase 14,624.
Every one of those arrivals needs somewhere to live, and many existing residents move as well. The ABS reported that 3.8 million Australians, or 15.0% of the population, moved address in the year before the 2021 Census, while its Housing Mobility and Conditions survey for 2019-20 found that 1.14 million households (12%) had moved at least once in the previous 12 months.
How many Western Australians are moving, and why does the gap between homes matter?
The ABS mobility survey found that private renters move far more often than owners: 29% of renters had lived in their current dwelling for less than one year, compared with 5% of owners. The most common reason for moving across all households was purchasing a home (20%), followed by wanting a bigger or better home (12%).
Those reasons often create a gap between leaving one property and settling into the next. Settlement dates slip, lease end dates rarely align with new lease start dates, and a household that downsizes may not know for weeks which furniture will fit.
